Houghton Mifflin Commemorates Holocaust Remembrance Day with Establishment of
Gerda and Kurt Klein Scholarship
BOSTON—April 13, 2007—As the nation marks Holocaust Remembrance Day on
April 15, Houghton Mifflin is proud to honor Holocaust survivor, author and
humanitarian Gerda Klein and her liberator and husband, Kurt, with a $10,000
scholarship in their name. Brought together on the eve of liberation during
World War II, the Kleins have since spent a lifetime advocating for religious
and ethnic tolerance and an end to bigotry. Awarded annually, the Gerda and
Kurt Klein Scholarship will be given to a high school student who works to
foster religious and ethnic tolerance in his or her own community.
Houghton Mifflin shares a common mission with the Kleins: enlightenment
through education. Gerda Klein has contributed her account of the Holocaust to
Houghton Mifflin social studies and language arts textbooks—including the
McDougal Littell texts, The Americans, The Language of Literature,
and the historical reader, The Holocaust.
"Gerda is a piece of living history who cares deeply about education and about
kids," said Rita Schaefer, president, McDougal Littell. "She supports numerous
special causes, but they all tie into education—she strongly feels it's the
only way to truly change the world."
As the population ages, the number of Holocaust survivors is decreasing every
day, and it is important to do whatever possible to never let their stories be
forgotten. Through the establishment of the Gerda and Kurt Klein Scholarship,
Houghton Mifflin is striving to keep that legacy alive for generations to come.
About Gerda and Kurt Klein
Gerda's childhood was forever
changed by the Nazi invasion in her quiet Polish town in 1939. After being
separated from her family and spending three years in a work camp, Gerda was
sent on a 300-mile death march on the eve of liberation. Abandoned by fleeing
Nazi soldiers in a small Czech town, Gerda was greeted by the first friendly
face she had seen in years: that of a young U.S. Army lieutenant, Kurt Klein.
Lieutenant Klein, himself an escaped German Jew, became not only Gerda's
liberator, but also the love of her life. The two were married one year later
in Paris and were together for more than 56 years until Kurt's death in 2002.
The Kleins' inspirational story is told in Gerda's autobiography, All But
My Life, and is the basis of the Oscar®- and Emmy®-award
winning HBO documentary, One Survivor Remembers.
About Holocaust Remembrance Day
According to the US Holocaust
Memorial Museum: "Holocaust Remembrance Day is a day that has been set aside
for remembering the victims of the Holocaust and for reminding Americans of
what can happen to civilized people when bigotry, hatred and indifference
reign." Called Yom Hashoah on the Hebrew Calendar, Holocaust
Remembrance Day takes place on the 27th of Nissan, which falls on April 15th
in 2007.
