Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to Receive ASPCA Roger Caras Achievement Award for Children's Literature
BOSTON — June 15, 2009 — Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Children's Book Group, part of global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, will receive the 2008 American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Roger Caras Achievement Award next month.
Named in honor of former ASPCA President Roger Caras, this annual award lauds individuals and organizations that inspire children with exceptional contributions to the animal community through literature, direct actions or media.
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Children's Book Group was recognized this year for its inspiring literary works about animals and the environment, and particularly for its Scientists in the Field series, which makes science accessible, relevant and intriguing to young readers. Over the last several years, nine Houghton Mifflin Harcourt authors, including Caldecott Medalist Beth Krommes, New York Times bestselling author Sy Montgomery and award-winning poet Joyce Sidman, have won the ASPCA's Henry Bergh Children's Book Award and Honors for promoting compassion and respect for living things.
"We are proud to once again be recognized by such an ethically and environmentally responsible organization," said Gary Gentel, president of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Trade and Reference Publishers. "The distinguished authors of our Scientists in the Field series reinforce the ASPCA's mission by educating children about the magic and dynamism of the natural world."
The ASPCA will present Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Children's Book Group with the award on July 13 at the 2009 American Library Association's Annual Conference in Chicago, Illinois.
