Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Honors the Humanitarian Spirit of Gerda and Kurt Klein through a Special $10,000 Scholarship for High School Students
High school seniors who work to foster religious and ethnic tolerance are invited to apply for the Gerda and Kurt Klein Scholarship
BOSTON — August 10, 2009 — Houghton Mifflin Harcourt proudly honors Holocaust survivor Gerda Klein and the man who liberated her, husband Kurt Klein, with a $10,000 scholarship in their names.
The Gerda and Kurt Klein Scholarship annually recognizes one high school student who embodies the Kleins' humanitarian spirit by fostering ethnic and religious tolerance and actively acting against bigotry and hatred.
Before Kurt's death in 2002, Gerda and her husband spent a lifetime together teaching young people about the injustices of their past and advocating tolerance and positive change. Gerda continues to educate younger generations through the Gerda and Kurt Klein Foundation, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting tolerance for differences, respect for others and the empowerment of students through education and community service.
"Houghton Mifflin Harcourt proudly joins longtime friend and inspiration, Gerda Klein, in her commitment to preserving the lessons of the Holocaust and creating a world free from prejudice," said Chief Executive Officer Barry O'Callaghan, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
Scholarship applications are available at http://www.hmco.com/pdf/klein_scholarship.pdf and must be received by August 31, 2009. For more information, and to download a brochure, visit http://www.hmco.com/pdf/klein_brochure.pdf.
